Title: Negotiating with a supplier

M: Thank you for coming to meet with me today. (※1)

W: Not at all. I find it much more productive to talk face to face. (※2)

M: As I explained over the phone, we are going to expand production of our latest model. (※3) Therefore, we would like to increase the number of components that we order from you each month.

W: Can you give me an estimate of the quantity you will need?

M: We will require approximately 10,000 units per month. Is it possible for you to supply that many? (※4)

W: That’s within the capacity of our existing factory although we would need to hire some new staff.

M: Because this is more than double the size of our current order, we’d also like to renegotiate the price per unit.

W: We may be able to offer a small reduction. What price do you have in mind? (※5)

M: Considering the size of the order, we think 11 dollars 75 cents per unit would be reasonable. (※6)

W: I’m afraid that is too low, especially since there will be added costs from training new staff.

M: One of your competitors has quoted us a price of 12 dollars per unit.

W: I think we can match that, provided that the contract is for at least two years.

【※1】 Thank you for coming to meet with me today.

Let’s meet at 12 for lunch.(12時に会って昼食をとろう。)I met him on my way to work.(出勤途中に偶然彼に会った。)

【※2】 I find it much more productive to talk face to face.

Can we talk in person about this?(これについては直接会ってお話できますか?)

【※3】 As I explained over the phone

We talked on the phone for hours.(私達は電話で何時間も話した。)

【※4】 Is it possible for you to supply that many?

【※5】 What price do you have in mind?

【※6】 Considering the size of the order, we think 11 dollars 75 cents per unit would be reasonable.

Considering that this is a large order….(これが大きい注文であることを踏まえて~。) Given that we need to hire new staff….(新しい職員を雇わなくてはいけないことを踏まえると~。)

Question 1: 正解は(A)

1. Where most likely is the conversation taking place?
(A) At the man’s workplace
(B) At the woman’s workplace
(C) At a conference
(D) In an airport

残りの選択肢は(A)と(B)ですが、会話文の冒頭で男性が“Thank you for coming to meet with me today.”(本日はお越しいただきありがとうございます。)

2. What does the man want to increase?
(A) The number of workers
(B) The budget for next year
(C) The size of the order
(D) Productivity at the factory

(A) 従業員

【解説】男性は二つ目の発言で“we would like to increase the number of components that we order from you each month”と述べています。 (That’s within the capacity of our existing factory although we would need to hire some new staff.)。

Question 3: 正解は(A)

3. What does the woman agree to do?
(A) Lower the price
(B) Improve the quality of the components
(C) Cancel the order
(D) Buy new equipment

(A) 値下げ

一つ目は部品の発注個数の増加(we would like to increase the number of components)、もう一つは値段交渉(we’d also like to renegotiate the price)です。
